Have you ever wondered how I came up with the name Wayfinders? If so, you’re not alone. It’s a question I get asked a lot.

I came up with it when I watched Moana sail a boat for the first time. She has never sailed before, but she is persistent, determined, and courageous. No matter how many times the boom knocks her off the boat or she heads in the wrong direction, she tries again. And, she makes it to Maui – her initial destination.

Once she has Maui on board, she asks him to teach her how to sail.

It’s clear he has A LOT more experience than she does. And, he answers, “It’s called Wayfinding, princess. It’s not just sails and knots. It’s seeing where you are going in your mind and knowing where you are by knowing where you’ve been.”

What is a Wayfinder?

Wayfinding is the ancient Polynesian practice of navigating the open oceans using deep knowledge and intense observation of the celestial bodies in the sky and the swells of the water.

You are ready to be a Wayfinder when you sense a deep yearning to follow your inner compass. When you realize that maybe you are living someone else’s dream rather than your own. When you feel lost and have stopped trusting yourself to make important decisions. When you are asking EVERYONE (your mom, your sister, your gynecologist) what you should do next.

“It’s called Wayfinding, princess. It’s not just sails and knots. It’s seeing where you are going in your mind and knowing where you are by knowing where you’ve been.”

You know you’ve become a Wayfinder when you use your keen self-awareness to not only change yourself and achieve your goals, but to optimize the performance of those around you.

You will know deep in your bones where you are going and have every confidence you’ll get there, because you see how every step you’ve ever taken has prepared you for it.

As a Wayfinder, you will continually ensure that you stay on the right, true course using deep self-knowledge and intense observation of your thoughts, actions, and habits.

A Wayfinder is someone who, in the midst of chaos, can access an inner compass that always points true north. ~ Martha Beck
